How do I know if a foundation crack is serious?

A hairline vertical crack under about 1/8 inch that isn't leaking is usually cosmetic shrinkage. A crack wider than 1/4 inch, a horizontal or stair-step crack, a crack that's actively leaking, or a wall that looks bowed inward should be assessed – those patterns point to movement rather than simple curing shrinkage.
